UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme

Launched in 1971, UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) is an Intergovernmental Scientific Programme focused on the relation between people and the environment and on the sustainable use of natural resources. Key to the MAB programme are the so-called UNESCO Biosphere Reserves (BRs). This modern protection and development concept facilitates the balance between biodiversity conservation, economic and social development and the preservation of local cultural values.
